Background of the Study
Economic diplomacy involves the use of diplomatic channels and international relations to promote national economic interests, particularly in the realm of trade. In Nigeria, where exports are a key driver of economic diversification and growth, economic diplomacy has emerged as a strategic tool for opening new markets and attracting foreign investment. Recent initiatives by the Nigerian government, especially those implemented between 2023 and 2025, have focused on leveraging diplomatic networks to negotiate better trade terms and resolve disputes that hinder export performance (Oluwole, 2023). Such diplomatic efforts include trade missions, bilateral and multilateral negotiations, and the formation of strategic alliances aimed at reducing non-tariff barriers and facilitating market access for Nigerian products.

The importance of economic diplomacy is underscored by the need to navigate an increasingly complex global trade environment. Nigerian exporters face challenges ranging from protectionist policies in developed markets to regulatory hurdles in emerging economies. In this context, proactive economic diplomacy serves as a bridge, enhancing the credibility and competitiveness of Nigerian products abroad. By fostering mutual economic benefits and resolving trade barriers, economic diplomacy can significantly contribute to boosting export volumes and diversifying export portfolios (Akinyemi, 2024). Moreover, such diplomatic engagements can facilitate knowledge transfer, improve technological capabilities, and stimulate industrial upgrading, all of which are critical for sustaining long-term export growth.

This study assesses the role of economic diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s export sectors by analyzing the outcomes of recent diplomatic engagements and their impact on export performance. The research will utilize both quantitative export data and qualitative insights from policymakers and industry experts to develop a comprehensive understanding of how diplomatic efforts translate into tangible economic benefits. Ultimately, the study aims to offer actionable recommendations for optimizing economic diplomacy strategies to further enhance Nigeria’s export capabilities (Oluwole, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in economic diplomacy, Nigeria’s export sectors continue to face persistent challenges in achieving competitive performance on the global stage. One primary issue is the disconnect between high-level diplomatic initiatives and the operational realities of exporters. While diplomatic efforts have succeeded in negotiating favorable terms in some instances, the expected boost in export volumes has been inconsistent, largely due to inadequate follow-through and limited capacity building among domestic producers (Akinyemi, 2024). Furthermore, bureaucratic delays, coordination problems among government agencies, and insufficient support for export-oriented industries have undermined the potential benefits of economic diplomacy.

This gap between diplomatic achievements and export performance creates uncertainty and erodes investor confidence, which in turn hampers the overall development of export sectors. The fragmented approach to economic diplomacy, coupled with a lack of targeted policies that directly address the operational challenges faced by exporters, continues to impede Nigeria’s ability to fully capitalize on its international trade opportunities. This study seeks to address these shortcomings by identifying the specific areas where economic diplomacy has fallen short and by proposing strategies that can bridge the gap between diplomatic initiatives and export performance (Akinyemi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of recent economic diplomacy initiatives on Nigeria’s export performance.

  • To identify operational challenges that limit the effectiveness of economic diplomacy in export promotion.

  • To propose targeted policy measures to enhance the linkage between diplomatic efforts and export sector growth.

Research Questions

  • How effective have economic diplomacy initiatives been in promoting Nigeria’s export sectors?

  • What are the key operational challenges that hinder the translation of diplomatic efforts into export growth?

  • What policy interventions can strengthen the impact of economic diplomacy on export performance?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Economic diplomacy initiatives positively influence Nigeria’s export volumes.

  • H₂: Operational inefficiencies diminish the potential benefits of economic diplomacy.

  • H₃: Targeted policy reforms can enhance the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts in promoting exports.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on economic diplomacy initiatives from 2015 to 2025, with a particular emphasis on their impact on export sectors. Limitations include the variability of diplomatic outcomes and difficulties in directly linking policy actions to export performance.

Definitions of Terms

  • Economic Diplomacy: The use of diplomatic efforts to achieve economic objectives, including trade promotion and dispute resolution.

  • Export Sectors: Industries that produce goods and services for international markets.

  • Diplomatic Initiatives: Government-led efforts to negotiate and engage with foreign entities to promote national interests.
